The third round of the World Championship came just a week after Monaco and so the field was not greatly changed with Vanwall running Stirling Moss, Tony Brooks and Stuart Lewis-Evans, Ferrari fielding Peter Collins, Mike hawthorn and Luigi Musso. The Cooper car company entered two cars for Jack Brabham and Roy Salvadori and Rob Walker ran a private car for Maurice Trintignant. BRM had cars for Jean Behra and Harry Schell, Lotus ran Cliff Allison and Graham Hill and the field was completed by three private Maserati 250Fs and an Ecurie Maarsbergen Porsche F2 car appeared for local hero Carel de Beaufort.

Vanwall dominated practice with Lewis-Evans on pole ahead of Moss and Brooks. Behra shared the second row with Brabham while Hawthorn was again the fastest Ferrari, sharing the third row with Schell and Trintignant.

The race was held on a holiday Monday and a large crowd turned out to watch. Moss took the lead from Lewis-Evans, a fast-starting Schell and Brooks, who had been hit from behind and would stop for repairs after a couple of laps. This meant that fourth place was taken over by Salvadori. On lap 12 Schell was able to get ahead of Lewis-Evans but by then Moss already had a big advantage. Further back Behra overtook Hawthorn and Salvadori to move into fourth place although this would become third on lap 47 when Lewis-Evans went out with an engine failure. Moss thus led home Schell and Behra with Salvadori fourth, Hawthorn fifth and Allison sixth in his Lotus.
